LIFESKILL ASSEMBLY - It was a hoot!

For our gathering, Mrs. Sullivan's class led over 300 humans in a mindful minute, our two principals of the day, Hannah and Emily, shared a few thoughts, Lucas, Justin, Elizabeth, and Callie (Leadership), spoke to Social Awareness, Mrs. Camarda's 1st-grade class shared their experiences with Writers Workshop, we all listened to a beautiful story related to diverse cultural celebrations followed by Mrs. Costello's words of wisdom, Home and School shared upcoming events and we closed down with a little Steph Curry singing! All can be found in the slideshow here.

COVID-19 PREVENTION MEETS WELLNESS WEEK

The concept of self-care has become mainstream in recent years. It “is the ability of individuals, families, and communities to promote health, prevent disease, maintain health, and cope with illness and disability with or without the support of a health worker.” as defined by the World Health Organization (WHO). During the current pandemic, promoting and maintaining health, preventing disease, plus coping with illness ARE key not only to the wellbeing of individual residents but our entire community.

To help achieve this aim, Marin County Office of Education in collaboration with Marin County Public Health and with deep gratitude to our sponsor Kaiser Permanente invites you to participate in Wellness Week Marin, December 6th-10th!

Wellness Week Marin will focus on the 8 Dimensions of Wellness, a broad term affected by our culture and our life experiences. The eight (8) Dimensions of Wellness are (1) Physical, (2) Social, (3) Intellectual, (4) Financial, (5) Spiritual, (6) Emotional, (7) Occupational, and last but not least, (8) Environmental.

For additional information visit the Wellness Week Marin webpage.

Social Awareness and celebrating diverse cultural celebrations

TRAVELING OVER THE HOLIDAYS

In anticipation of our long Holiday break, during which many of our families will be traveling and gathering, we want to be proactive in presenting new guidelines from Public Health. Whether you are traveling out of state or hosting others from out of state, gathering outside or inside, please be mindful to protect yourselves and others from the Coronavirus and its new variant (Omnicron) by limiting the size of your gathering, wearing masks indoors, distancing and testing before returning to school. Please take action now to acquire home antigen tests you can administer as suggested below.

New guidance from Public Health encourages families to test their children (Sunday) at home before returning to school (Monday) and again 5 days after returning from holiday travel (in-state) and family gatherings. Note that the travel guidance states that children who are not fully vaccinated (two weeks after the second dose of vaccine) and returning from out-of-state travel may return to school under a Modified Quarantine (no extracurricular activities for 8 days) and should test on Day 5 after returning home form travel. Students may end Modified Quarantine on Day 8 with a negative test if not symptomatic.

Of course, the Decision Trees are still in effect should your child develop symptoms or discover they have been exposed to COVID. Please notify the school immediately, even over the holiday break, and see your healthcare provider.

Here is a resource listing the FDA-approved rapid/home/antigen tests that are available for purchase at most drug stores or online.

PARTNERING WITH OUR LOCAL SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT

Our local site officers stopped by LVE and shared this. Happy to pass the word for our local community caretakers!

SITE DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND INCLUSION MEETING

The small but quaint meeting led by our lead Lilian Ojeda focused on ideas for December, January, and February activities, potential assembly guests, LGBTQ parent evening review, and incorporating a cultural component to the Home and School Club Johnny's Donuts event. We thank Brad Honsberger, Board Trustee, who joined us in our conversation. Our next meeting is on January 27th and we hope you can join us.

LEGO CLUB VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

We continue to reach out for additional opportunities for our children during lunch. If you have one day a week you can spare between the hours of 12-1 we would love to have you support our new lego club in the MPR. Not much other than being present for them. Easy and a fantastic avenue for our children. Contact me at wanderson@millercreeksd.org, if you have an interest.

LUCAS VALLEY STAFF MEETING

At this time you know that writing is a significant focus area for our children, K-8, and here at Lucas Valley, we are pushing it hard with daily writing experiences, a common language, and a lot of professional development for our teachers.

This last Wednesday was no different as our Lion teaching team hunkered down and focused on drawing connections between an excellent primary resource, Jennifer Serravallo's Writing Strategy Book, and our ongoing work with our Momentum in teaching partners. See below...

3RD-5TH GRADE TEAM WRITING P.D.

So proud of the effort and diligence of our teachers!

WELCOME TO THE TEAM

we are happy to welcome Mara Bauer, LVE's newest addition to our intervention instructional team. She joins Julie McKeon and Aparna Budraja.

PRINCIPALS OF THE DAY - Hannah and Emily!

What a wonderful day I had hanging out with Hannah and Emily. Both were superstars moving through classrooms, reading books to kindergarten students, helping with Mrs. Costello's classroom and her students, wearing with Lion Pride the school keys and radios, and eating pizza and cookies with their friends (did I just say cookies? I mean oranges and apple slices).

CAN DO UPDATE

Thank you to all those that participated and bid in this year's Can Do! Holiday Online Auction! It was a HUGE success!! Because of your support, we exceeded our goal! We are SO grateful!!

This week is Wellness Week, and this year Can Do! is proud to have increased funding around student wellness. With your support, we are able to fund the new K-5 Counselor and provide expanded Social-Emotional Learning. These programs help students improve their academics, boost self-confidence and motivation, and develop stronger communication skills, all of which can lead to increased lifelong health.

We can't do this though without your donation. We are grateful for any amount, and every dollar counts to help supports every student, every day. Together, we Can Do!

PLEASE DONATE TODAY!

PEANUT ALLERGIES

As you know, Lucas Valley has a few children with life-threatening food allergies, specifically, to Peanuts/Tree Nuts. These foods, even in trace amounts, may cause a severe reaction (anaphylaxis). The following symptoms may occur: hives, difficulty breathing, vomiting and diarrhea, swelling of the lips, mouth, and throat, itching and sneezing, and loss of consciousness.

Here are a few suggestions for you as parents:

  • Ask your child’s friends what they are allergic to and help them to avoid it.
  • Remind your child, “DO NOT SHARE FOOD.”
  • Remind your child, to wash hands thoroughly after eating.
  • Tell your child to get help from an adult immediately if a schoolmate has a reaction.
  • PLEASE DO NOT SEND ANY PRODUCTS WITH PEANUTS/TREE NUTS FOR SNACKS OR PARTIES.

COMMUNITY FLYERS

Parents can access community flyers by visiting the Community Resources page on the Miller Creek School District website. New flyers this week:
