Join the amazing Anthony Fontaine and his team of K-5 riders as we ride to school in our holiday outfits, with song and cheer paving the path towards the LVE campus! The route is shown below and we encourage all of you to join us! Super fun if you have never done this before. Parents are welcome and encouraged to join. Just pull that bike out of the garage and meet us at the tennis courts by 7:30. Will Not Regret This Experience!

AN IMPORTANT REMINDER TO FAMILIES

The little park area on Shasta and Idyleberry with the lighted tree is a great place to hang out but I heard that last Tuesday, several families were there after school and apparently not paying attention to the activities of their children. As such, several plants that were planted many years ago were trampled on, and rocks were moved and thrown around. I stopped by to visit on Wednesday afternoon to take a peek and indeed, that was the case. Bummer. Such a beautifully kept area by so many community folks. To support this beautiful space, please, please, if you hang out in that area and allow your children to play there, be sure to watch what they are doing. I will be sure to remind them in my announcements. I was pretty disappointed to get that call. Thanks for helping out everyone!

Mr. Peregoy, working his magic

So appreciate John and the rest of our teaching team. You have to be there to appreciate the moment-to-moment interactions they have with your children. I have worked in schools where this type of attention happens periodically. At LVE, it is a regular occurrence.

2nd Grade Magic happening here!

The holidays bring out the most festive of colors!

GOOD FUN AND A GREAT MESSAGE FROM OUR DISTRICT HEALTH SPECIALIST TEAM - Super fun for your kids too!!!!

Click this link for the awesome video

In anticipation of our long Holiday break, during which many of our families will be traveling and gathering, we want to be proactive in presenting new guidelines from Public Health.

Whether you are traveling out of state or hosting others from out of state, gathering outside or inside, please be mindful to protect yourselves and others from the Coronavirus and its new variant (Omnicron) by:

  • Limiting the size of your gatherings
  • Wearing masks indoors
  • Distancing and testing before returning to school

Please take action now to acquire home antigen tests you can administer as suggested below.

New guidance from Public Health encourages families to test their children (Sunday) at home before returning to school (Monday) and again 5 days after returning from holiday travel (in-state) and family gatherings. See the attachment for links and more!

Note that the travel guidance states that children who are not fully vaccinated (two weeks after the second dose of vaccine) and returning from out-of-state travel may return to school under a Modified Quarantine (no extracurricular activities for 8 days) and should test on Day 5 after returning home form travel. Students may end Modified Quarantine on Day 8 with a negative test if not symptomatic.

Of course, the Decision Trees are still in effect should your child develop symptoms or discover they have been exposed to COVID. Please notify your school Principal (wanderson@millercreeksd.org) immediately, even over the holiday break, and see your healthcare provider.

Here is a resource listing the FDA-approved rapid/home/antigen tests that are available for purchase at most drug stores or online.

See below attachment for a Holiday Gathering Fact Sheet.

I hope everyone has a happy healthy safe holiday break!

DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND INCLUSION TEAM UPDATE

The DEI District meeting took place on December 7th of this week. At this meeting, the DEI Leads for each of the elementary schools were introduced, and had a chance to share DEI efforts of the past three months as well as the process of collaboration.

The month of October/Hispanic Latin-X heritage was led by Vallecito with a poster showcase of various current famous people from the Hispanic/LatinX community.

In November we celebrated Native American Heritage month led by LVE with a lot of support from the other DEI leads, as this was our first month with representation in the group. We were able to put up impactful and beautiful posters showcasing the values of Native Americans, and also shared several activities for students and parents to participate in person or via zoom.

MES lead Diverse celebrations in December and created a form for input from families on celebrations from your tradition. We passed out the form at the LVE Donut Saturday and enjoyed coloring and chalk painting of holidays across cultures.

This takes us to January 2022! We will focus on Celebrating Diverse Abilities with posters created by our student leadership, book suggestions, and potentially an assembly.

LVE will once again be the lead school to present activation ideas for Black History Month in February. We are already working on booking an author and storyteller to visit LVE. I will be sending out an idea board for collaboration and brainstorming.

We need your help with ideas as well as to bring all these great programs to life every month. If you are interested in adding to the idea board for Black History month or volunteering for DEI activations please email me, lucasvalleydei@gmail.com.  We welcome all and need your help - Lilian Ojeda!

This Sunday (12/12) is our Fall Mulch-a-thon! Come at 10 am and stay as long as you can - let's make the outdoor spaces at our school look beautiful!

Mark your calendars as in January we will focus on celebrating abilities. We will create posters highlighting famous people of diverse abilities. This will be a project for the kids to participate in. We are also looking into an assembly speaker for the kids.

OUR TEACHERS WORKING IT!

Continuing to plan and prepare for your children in the area of writing. This high-powered focus of ours continues as we spend time and thought in the areas of Narrative and Informational Writing. In addition to our site work, sharing practices, investigating, and learning together, we continue to engage with our professional Development partners, Momentum In Teaching.

On January 28th, a key Momentum in Teaching leader, Chris Rodenhizer, will make his way to our school and model what a writing lesson looks like. No better way than modeling!

Safe Routes To School Visit

Our important community partners stopping by to help educate our students about bike safety. Super appreciated!

PARTNERING WITH OUR LOCAL SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT

Our local site officers stopped by LVE and shared this. Happy to pass the word for our local community caretakers!

LEGO CLUB VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

If you have one day a week you can spare between the hours of 12-1 we would love to have you support our new lego club in the MPR. We are searching long and far for legos as well! If you have extra legos you would like to donate to the cause, please let me know.

We continue to reach out for additional opportunities for our children during lunch. Not much other than being present for them. Easy and a fantastic avenue for our children. Contact me at wanderson@millercreeksd.org, if you have an interest.

REMINDERS ABOUT TARDIES

Noticing that we are experiencing quite a few folks coming to school late. 21 on Friday, December 10th, alone. We definitely have to change that as it creates a hardship on the students and the teacher who then has to backtrack and teach again. More to come on this a little later but thanks for keeping this in your thoughts.

FREE DIGITAL LIBRARY ACCESS AND BOOKS FOR ALL CALIFORNIA STUDENTS

As part of State Superintendent Tony Thurmond's literacy initiative, the California Department of Education (CDE) has partnered with Renaissance Learning to ensure that every California student can access thousands of reading resources from December 1, 2021, to January 31, 2022.

The myON digital library and news articles in multiple languages can be accessed for free by all pre-K to grade twelve students in California.

All books downloaded during the two months are able to be retained and accessed afterward.

Please use the Family Letter templates below to access.

Read more in the CDE news release or email them at communications@cde.ca.gov. Any questions about the Renaissance partnership should be directed to Kim Shoemaker at kim.shoemaker@renaissance.com.

PEANUT ALLERGIES

As you know, Lucas Valley has a few children with life-threatening food allergies, specifically, to Peanuts/Tree Nuts. These foods, even in trace amounts, may cause a severe reaction (anaphylaxis). The following symptoms may occur: hives, difficulty breathing, vomiting and diarrhea, swelling of the lips, mouth, and throat, itching and sneezing, and loss of consciousness.

Here are a few suggestions for you as parents:

  • Ask your child’s friends what they are allergic to and help them to avoid it.
  • Remind your child, “DO NOT SHARE FOOD.”
  • Remind your child, to wash hands thoroughly after eating.
  • Tell your child to get help from an adult immediately if a schoolmate has a reaction.
  • PLEASE DO NOT SEND ANY PRODUCTS WITH PEANUTS/TREE NUTS FOR SNACKS OR PARTIES.
