🎼4TH GRADE FAMILIES ONLY - Music Choices

The Miller Creek School District fifth grade music program offers your child band, choir, or orchestra class twice a week for forty-five minutes per class. There will also be winter and spring concerts.  All fifth-grade music students will strengthen their instrumental technique, and note-reading skills, and learn more about working together in a music class.  All students will have access to comprehensive music education.

Please complete this Google Form by May 15th, 2022 to submit your child’s first and second music class choices for next year. They should also choose what instrument they want within that music class (for orchestra or band only).

Please do not send an email to the classroom teacher, district, or music teachers to advocate for a particular class. Classes are balanced based on a number of variables including your child’s preference.

A SMATTERING OF YOUTH TRUTH FAMILY SURVEY RESULTS

I will be sharing shots of your feedback in the weeks ahead, both areas of strength and need. I will share graphs and quotes from your feedback. It is deeply valued and will help us move forward into next year. There is more to the survey than this of course but this allows all of you a glimpse into the results.

LET US BEGIN WITH A FEW STRENGTHS...

AND NOW A FEW AREAS OF NEED...

COMMUNITY RESOURCES

Parents can access community flyers by visiting the Community Resources page on the Miller Creek School District website. New flyers this week:

  • 2022 MCSL Fall Soccer Registration
  • 22-23 AC Marin Tryouts

CLASS PLACEMENT REQUESTS FOR THE 2022-2023 YEAR

Staff and I are beginning the process of planning for next year and will soon begin designing classes based on enrollment projections.

As per Board Policy, the teaching staff and principal share the responsibility for student placement. The teachers meet by grade level before the end of the year to develop classes. Classes will be designed based upon the following criteria:

➢ The ratio of boys to girls

➢ Students with special needs

➢ Second language learners

➢ Learning styles

➢ Social/Emotional needs

➢ Citizenship

Parent input will be considered if the input is based upon clear-cut educational or developmental needs (per board policy). All input must be received between April 25th and May 13th and be in writing to the principal.

Note that accommodations will not be made to place your student in a class with a particular teacher or with friends and we ask that you do not include specific teacher names in your correspondence.

Additionally, a family may have had a sibling in a class with a particular teacher previously but this is not considered a valid educational reason for placement. Each child’s needs are unique and because a brother or sister liked or disliked a teacher does not mean the sibling will have the same experience.

The key ingredient to this process is trust. You need to trust that we will do the best job possible in placing your student with all the information at our disposal. We do the best job we can because it is important to us that each child has the optimum chance for success.

Erica and Steve Gendreau, LVE Home, and School Team members, killing it with an extension to our garden! With this shift, more bodies and activities in the garden. You can't stop these two, we can only hope to contain them🔥

CAASPP AND CAST TESTING PRACTICE FOR FAMILIES

Here is the website that is provided for families by the state with information about the CAASPP and CAST tests. Parents can find sample test questions and more detailed information about the tests, score reports, and additional resources to support their child with testing. There's no need to log in to anything and the site is translated into multiple languages. It's very user-friendly for those families wanting to learn more about the tests.

I've also included a simplified flyer about both CAASPP and CAST that gives families a quick overview of testing that you can include in your parent newsletters. I've included versions in both English and Spanish.

PHOTO CLUB UPDATE

Week 3 of Photo club was a blast. The kids are learning more and more about how to compose a great image and we are seeing some really great photos from these superstars. This week we talked all about framing up your shot with 3 important tips to keep in mind...

1. make sure your framing is straight
2. don't be afraid to move in closer to your subject to fill the frame.
3. what is the orientation? Horizontal vs. vertical? which fills your frame best?

Big shout out to the photo of the week photographer...JAQI (See photo above) . Jaqi's photo is the featured photo under highlights.  Jaqi you did a fantastic job of filling your frame, making it straight, and you weren't afraid to move in close to your subjects.  And can we talk about the great expressions on their faces! Great Job Jaqi.  Looking forward to another club next Monday!

If you are unable to find a COVID-19 vaccination clinic open at a time that works with your schedule, more options are available by visiting California Department of Public Health’s MyTurn COVID and flu vaccination scheduling website.

We are grateful to everyone in our community who has done their part by getting fully vaccinated and boosted when eligible.

PEANUT ALLERGIES

As you know, Lucas Valley has a few children with life-threatening food allergies, specifically, to Peanuts/Tree Nuts. These foods, even in trace amounts, may cause a severe reaction (anaphylaxis). The following symptoms may occur: hives, difficulty breathing, vomiting and diarrhea, swelling of the lips, mouth, and throat, itching and sneezing, and loss of consciousness. Here are a few suggestions for you as parents:

  • Ask your child’s friends what they are allergic to and help them to avoid it.
  • Remind your child, “DO NOT SHARE FOOD.”
  • Remind your child, to wash hands thoroughly after eating.
  • Tell your child to get help from an adult immediately if a schoolmate has a reaction.
  • Try not to send products with peanuts/tree nuts for snacks or class gathering
